‘I’m hoping for a boy’: Duchess of Cambridge reveals she wants a son but says Prince William would prefer a daughter

According to the Daily Mail today Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, would prefer a boy and Prince William wants a girl.  This implies that they have not had a scan to find out the sex yet.

According to a recent survey I conducted over half of the participants found out the sex of their baby during the pregnancy.

In times gone by, finding out the sex of ones baby was not an option.  In my opinion, the need to find out the sex of your baby often arises in our culture to eliminate, or at least reduce the number of unknowns about being pregnant, giving birth and becoming a mother.  The transition into motherhood involves mystery and entering the territory of the unknown and unfamiliar.  Our culture does not embrace mystery and the unknown, favouring being in control.

Worry and anxiety during pregnancy and labour stimulate fight or flight hormones and can interfere with oxytocin levels which are required during labour and after the birth.  The more a woman can relax into the mystery and unknown to pregnancy and birth, the easier she will be able surrender, trust and allow the process to unfold.  The more she holds on to being in control, the more challenges that will arise as a result.  Needing to know the sex of the baby may be a symptom of needing to be in control of the process.

Having said that, there are circumstances when finding out the sex of the baby can be beneficial and I have worked with mothers to support them in situations where there has been anxiety about the sex of the baby.  Also where there are religious beliefs about the benefits of having one sex over another.

If a woman wants to know the sex of the baby, I believe she would be supported more positively by exploring the reasons why she wants to know and I would use EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)/ Tapping to reduce anxiety and increase her trusting mindset that is more open to embracing the unknown and empowering her to feel more prepared for birth and to become a mother.

There research to suggest that  ultrasound scans affect the baby.  More details here: http://www.wddty.com/ultrasound-the-scan-scam.html  so I would encourage the woman to be fully informed and if she decides to go ahead and scan, then talk to the baby (creates bonding and connection) about what is about to happen and why.
