Comment on “Our Problem With Power” in Saturday Guardian

In the Saturday Guardian, Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook boss. shared an extract of her new book “Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead” by  she states that  “I am fine applying the word “powerful” to other women – the more the better – but I still shake my head in denial when it is applied to me. The nagging voice in the back of my head reminds me, as it did in business school, ‘Don’t flaunt your success, or even let people know about your success. If you do, people won’t like you.'”

Many people are brought up with these beliefs often internalising them in childhood by parents or teachers.

This reminds me of the poem by Marianne Williamson which was read by Nelson Mandela at his Inauguration Speech:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Recently I took part in a six week PR and Media Skills course for holistic practitioners with Janey Lee Grace.  Her moto was that is was our duty to spread our message to the world, to step into the spotlight and shine our light.  This brought up all sorts of fears and beliefs about keeping small so when Janey invited us to sing our praises, I realised it was time to face my fears!  It was an amazing and challenging journey which brought me to a place of being able to feel confident about sharing my story authentically and step into my power so that I can shine my light.  I would highly recommend Janey’s course to any holistic practitioner.
