Birth Art Cafe Training

Birth Art Cafe Training

On Monday I was lucky enough to spend the day with nine wise women passionate about birth who were attending the Birth Art Cafe Training with me.  The Birth Art Cafe is a weekly gathering of pregnant women and new mums to explore the motherhood journey through creativity and relaxation.

One of the topics that arose was how to address the questions that participants ask.  Some of the trainees are already birth professionals and therefore have a wealth of knowledge at their finger tips so it is temping to give advice/ suggestions.

The Birth Art Cafe is primarily a right brain experience.  All activities engage the right brain which is associated with instinct, creativity, intuition, surrender, flow.  All these qualities are key to giving birth and mothering.   All these qualities are also often difficult for women in our culture to access.  The questions whose answers could be found on google are not the types of questions that are engaged with at the Birth Art Cafe.  For example, discussing the pros and cons of which baby buggy or sling to buy brings them out of their right brain into their thinking mind.

With left brain questions, it is more empowering to ask the questioner what their motivation for asking question was, what their concerns are and where they feel that in their body. Bringing the question back to themselves and guiding them sensitively to find the answer that feels right to them (which may or may not be the right answer for you!), empowers them to trust in themselves – always a good thing in birth and mothering!

The same is with our children – if we can encourage them to have their own thoughts by not always answering their questions but guiding them to find their own opinions/ solutions we can empower them – not something I am very good at yet!
