Yesterday I was asked by the lovely Maggie Howell to give a talk at a about the benefits of using EFT for birth at a Natal Hypnotherapy Study Day. I was met by a lovely bunch of women passionate about making a difference about birth who were willing to try out some tapping to heal some of their own issues relating to fertility, birth and parenting. I asked for 5 volunteers to be willing to have some EFT at the front of the group and after only about 5-10 minutes on each, they experienced moderate to massive relief on their issues.
EFT is so wonderful for the motherhood journey for so many reasons. Here are some of them:
- It is quick, easy and safe to learn.
- Pregnant women can use it on themselves to help with physical complaints when they can’t take medical drugs.
- During pregnancy it is great for releasing fears and focussing on having a positive birth experience
- It can be used to assist natural or medicalised labour
- During labour, the woman can do it on herself or her partner/ birth supporter can do it on her or for her (pain, fear, failure to progress…)
- After birth it can release birth trauma
- It can be used with the baby for sleep. feeding or crying issues
- With the mother it can help with post-natal blues/ depression
- For mothers with children it can help with toddler tantrums, bullying, exams and more
- Before conception for fertility especially if the reasons are unexplained.
EFT dovetails really well with other therapies and many of the people who train to become practitioners are body or talk therapists or birth practitioners. One way to use it for birth preparation would be to tap while listening to a birth visualisation to increase positive feelings while releasing any blocks to a positive birth outcome.
Here is an example of how one would use EFT with one of the most common pregnancy fears – losing control during labour. So I thought I would share an EFT script to support you or your client with this issue, whether you are a natal-hypnotherapist, birth professional or pregnant woman. Fear of losing control is common because we live in a society where being in control in the cultural norm. Maybe it stems from the Victorian era of “stiff upper lip”. Expressing emotion has only recently become more acceptable and still difficult for many. Common concerns about losing control may be:
- what will people think of me
- what will my partner think of me
- what if I can’t cope
- what if I end up asking for an intervention I don’t want
These concerns can be reduced or even eliminated using EFT. If you are not already familiar with EFT, you can download a free manual here. Once you are familiar with the points, tap along to these statements:
Setup statements on karate chop point:
Even though I am scared of losing control, I am open to the possibility of accepting myself and this fear.
Even though I am scared of what people will think of me, I accept myself just as I am.
Even though I am scared of losing control because….. I choose to remember that this is part of the process.
Statements for tapping points:
Crown: scared of losing control
Beginning of eyebrow: I can feel it in my … <where in your body>
Side of eye: What will people think of me
Under eye: What if I can’t cope
Under nose: The unknown
Under lower lip: I’ve never done this before
Collar bone: Losing control
Under arm: If I lose control <xxx> might happen
Crown: Scared of losing control
Beginning of eyebrow: This feeling
Side of eye: Allowing it to be fully present
Under eye: I’ve been avoiding feeling this
Under nose: I’ve been pushing it away
Under lower lip: Allowing this feeling to be here
Collar bone: So that I can release it fully
Under arm: And let it go
Obviously these words are very generic and may not apply to you so please do tailor this script with words that resonate with you. The more specific the wording applies to you directly, the more likely you will have positive results.
