I am deeply humbled to share this interview with a member of prison staff, who does EFT tapping for her prisoners. Many of the young offenders in her prison have experienced violence from a young age and all of them have been physical, emotional or sexual abused. They generally come from families where mothers or fathers have been in or are in prison. One recent new prisoner involved in an attempted murder had been stabbed 4 times previously. Although she never condones crimes she has an insight as to how they came to do what they did. She says they are operating from a place of complete terror. They have not been looked after so from a young age, they’ve had no adults to rely on so have become self reliant and learnt not to trust.
This member of the prison staff taps for them on her way to work, during her work day and after work. She would love to know that there is a team of tappers supporting her.
She sees the prisoners or young people as she likes to refer to them as beautiful bright bubbly kids who have their whole life ahead of them, but they hold a belief that this it it!
She recalls talking to one of them saying that when he would be her age, he would be doing such and such and he replied “Miss – I’m never going to be your age”. And she realised that there was some truth in that – if he continues down that path, he probably won’t live to her age because he will be killed.
She says that all they need is kindness and respect – something they have never experienced. And that can be even the simplest thing such as knocking on their cell door before entering, referring to their cell as their room, showing interest or giving praise… Just a few kids words can light them up (just like it would any kid). She makes sure that every time she has a meeting with them, she lets them know she is pleased to see them, she’s enjoyed her time with them, she thanks them for their time and tell them that they are brilliant in some way (as well as talking about the challenging stuff). And the results are “like watching butter melt and you see their light”.
Watch this video to hear her talk about young prisoners and join us in doing some EFT Tapping to support her in supporting them.
